Before embarking on your new RFID project consider the following which will help us develop a better understanding of what you are trying to achieve.

- What do I want to achieve from using RFID?
- Where and when do I need to read the RFID tag?
- What read distance do I need from the tag?
- What is the material and contents that the tag is being placed onto?
- Will this material or its contents affect the read distance?
- If so will I need a special RFID tag for my product?

- How many tags will I need per month or in total?
- When do I need a solution implemented by?

RFID FREQUENCIES

  • PASSIVE TAGS

    A tag is defined as passive if it has no battery.
    In applications that use passive tags, RF energy from the reader powers tag circuits.
    Passive tags have a lower overall read distance.
    The lifespan of passive tags is indefinite because the tag has no battery.


  • ACTIVE TAGS

    These tags are powered by an internal battery or external power source and provide far greater read distances than passive tags.
    However the trade off is that the size of the tag can be much bigger compared to a passive tag and active tags have a higher overall cost.


  • HF - (High Frequency)

    NZ : 13.56MHz
    Used when short read distances are satisfactory. Generally used for access / proximity cards or similar.


  • UHF - (Ultra High Frquency)

    NZ: 864 - 868MHz and 915MHZ
    Used in cases where longer read distances than HF are required.
    Used a lot in RFID labels and for asset tags.


  • UWB - (Ultra Wide Band)

    NZ : 6Ghz - 8.5Ghz
    (Based on EU Standards)
    Used for real time location of products, people and machines. UWB solutions have a long, accurate read distance.
